Do you ever have that feeling of Simplicity and Ease when you step into a room?

Where the colours, the textures, the overall feel of the atmosphere leaves you feeling peaceful and inspired?

That is exactly what I was craving in my life for my bedroom / home office. So, I called on friend and designer extraordinaire Lisa Canning, to work her magic. Lisa was able to create a space that feels both serene and calming for a bedroom, yet pulled in the pops of colour and vibrancy that I love so much. For me, colours bring harmony, and spark my creative juices, which is perfect for my simple, but effective home workspace.

How do you create a space that is both peaceful and serene for a Master Bedroom, yet organized and creative for a home office?

Begin with a Beautiful Bed

Sleep is a non-negotiable for me. I need a minimum of 8-9 hours of sleep each night to rest, repair, and heal my body. So, having a big gorgeous bed to dive into was the perfect place to start. And this Wayfair bed does not disappoint. I don’t know about you, but I am not a fan of shopping in general! Being able to order this online was a big-time bonus.

Mattress quality is also key. With postural alignment + ergonomic health in mind, we chose The Casper Mattress. Incredible comfort, ideal anatomical support, and focused spinal alignment – this mattress is like a Mama’s dream! We got the lush and soft sheets from Casper’s too.

Living on the water means no basement for storage, so every inch of our home matters. This means that every time we put work into a renovation, we need to think, plan and execute to maximize our space. Hidden drawers anyone?!

Choose the Ideal Spot for a Home Office

What most people don’t know is that our Master Bedroom is where I film all of my online classes for The Simplicity Project & The Hormone Project, plus all of my Facebook + Instagram Lives. So it was of the utmost importance to create the right kind of space and backdrop to host hundreds of each women each week, via the ever fabulous internet.

We chose this corner of the bedroom to custom-build the perfect work space. We went for a custom build in order to optimize our storage space and keep my office organized, yet playful and creative.

My Uber talented husband and Custom Builder Chris Borsellino, of CDM General Contracting created every inch of work in this room from the ship-lap to the barn doors, custom built-in desk and cabinetry…not to mention he built our entire home from the ground up. #keeper

The other amazing thing about going custom, is that we were able to paint the desk this stunning turquoise colour that I’ve been vibing lately, Benjamin Moore Waterfall 2050-50.  And can I gush about these brass, hand cast cabinet pulls? They are designed by a local Toronto entrepreneur Shayne Fox. Small touches like this make all the difference.

When it comes to keeping our space de-cluttered and free from overwhelm. I, my friends have become a purge, donate, sell it, chuck it expert.

Add Splashes of Your Personal Touch + Decor

I mentioned this earlier, but I LOVE colour. So when Lisa suggested adding a pop of Benjamin Moore Yellow Highlighter 2021-40 to this door was an absolute, whole-hearted YES!

I’m currently writing 2 new books this summer, so when I sit down at my office, I need to be surrounded by personal pieces of decor and inspiration to ground me, and get me into the creative flow.

These small decorative pieces from Bouclair really hit the mark.

Your Office Chair is CRUCIAL

Protecting the integrity of your spine, your posture and your booty is of the utmost importance when it comes to creating a home office. This is truly the centre of my office, so I made sure to choose the best possible chair, the Core Chair.

This sums it up best —

The Core Chair focuses on optimal posture through core stabilization and movement that mobilizes key joints most affected by sitting. We made our seat highly sculpted to relieve pressure points, prevent sliding and deliver comfort. It works in conjunction with the low back, stabilizing the pelvis to optimize your sitting posture, reduce back pain and prevent slumping at your desk. Many of us are actively seeking therapeutic remedies to help reduce our back pain. Prolonged static sitting in traditional chairs (even high end ergonomic chairs) can result in uncomfortable back strain and lack of movement. Invest in your health with an innovative seating solution designed to harmonize your personal movement with your chair.

Stay tuned; I filmed a video at my new desk and core chair to show you my favourite tools and how I best optimize my work space to mitigate the effects of sitting. I will be releasing that one at the end of August! Check jennpike.com/videos to watch!

I highly recommend working with Lisa. We honestly cannot say enough wonderful things about her. She simply is one of the kindest, most talented women I know.
