Welcome back to The Simplicity Sessions, I’m delighted that you’ve joined us today. My name is Jenn Pike, your host, registered holistic nutritionist, medical exercise specialist, the best-selling author of the Simplicity Project and the creator of the women’s revolutionary health program, The Hormone Project.

This is a conversation with the wonderful Phoebe Lapine about SIBO (Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth). We discuss her own struggles with SIBO, the signs and symptoms to look for, how to test for SIBO and simplify it. We also talk through various treatments that are available, both Western medicine based and holistic that you could tap into.

If you’re not already aware of Phoebe Lapine, she is a Food and Health writer, a gluten-free chef and the voice behind the Award-winning blog FeedMePhoebe. She was named by Women’s Health magazine as a top nutrition read of 2017, as well as 1 of 100 women to watch in wellness by Mind Body Green.

Her debut memoir, the Wellness Project, chronicles her journey with the autoimmune disease, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which we discussed in detail in an episode of Simplicity Sessions on April 8th. She is host of the SIBO Made Simple podcast and the author of the book, SIBO Made Simple, which helps those newly diagnosed or chronically fighting small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Quotes

  • The Hashimoto’s SIBO connection was fascinating to me, not things that I ever truly understood before.”
  • The interesting thing about SIBO is because the food poisoning part is very insidious, because it is this kind of two-day experience. And then most people are feeling okay afterwards but because of what happens in the gut and it’s kind of actually an acute case of auto-immunity, where your immune system in the process of attacking whatever pathogen has come in accidentally attacks the nerve cells in your migrating motor complex, which is heart of all of SIBO.”
  • It really just depends on you. There is a very diverse toolkit and lots of options, and unfortunately, some people do need all of those options in order to kind of hone in on the one that resonates or on the combination of things that resonates because the bacteria in your gut are incredibly diverse.”
  • IBS is the most prevalent gastrointestinal diagnosis in the world”
  • Where people kind of get too bogged down is thinking that CBO is kind of a disease and how do I get rid of CBO? When in reality you should be asking the questions of why did I get CBO? What it is and what it isn’t.”
  • There had to be a vulnerability and a catalyst. And then you bring those two together and now here we are, or all your vulnerabilities just eventually added up right over time.”
  • The hallmark would be the consistency. So, you know, kind of feeling that way and the bloat every time you eat, waking up with a flat stomach, but as soon as you eat breakfast, that changes”
  • Primary test is something called a breath test.”
  • Start to pay attention, you will know. What is actually really irritating your body, it is the most compelling thing to get you to make a change”
