Day 10 and it’s all about your B’s!!

In my last post we chatted about signs and symptoms of being B12 deficient and here we are talking about different food sources to help ensure you are getting enough of this super-vitamin in.

Since vitamin B12 cannot be made by any animals or plants, the B12 content of animals and plants depends on their ability to store the vitamin and their relationship to microorganisms (like bacteria in the soil). Because of their greater ability to store vitamin B12, animals contain more of the vitamin than plants. Excellent sources of vitamin B12 are therefore limited to animal foods. These foods include snapper and calf’s liver…ummm GROSS!!! please don’t eat the cow liver:(.

Good sources of vitamin B12 include organic lean beef, venison, shrimp, scallops, salmon, eggs and fortified dairy. Within the plant world, sea plants (like kelp), algaes (like blue-green algae), yeasts (like brewer’s yeast and nutritional yeast), and fermented plant foods (like tempeh, miso, or tofu) are the most commonly consumed food sources of vitamin B12. Fortified cereals and dairy alternatives such as some almond, rice, oat and hemp milks may also help your body’s B12 intake.

As with any of my recommendations when it comes to food and supplements, your goal should be to have an overall balance of all required and essential nutrients. You don’t read this post and then wake up tomorrow and say “yeah, I read this great blog from Jenn Pike about B12 and now I am on the snapper, baby cow liver and deer diet with a glass of milk on the side…

Begin to build your internal toolbox if you will, of all things good, yummy and healthy for you to consume in order to have great digestion, great absorption and awesome vitality!

And most importantly; keep reading, books, blogs, magazines etc listen to all suggestions, philosophies and guidelines with one ear and then listen to your gut, your truest guru with the other.

If the information that you are reading or listening to sounds good and truly resonates with you than I would say you have found yourself a new course of action or ‘doing’. If it does not sit well with you than you simply move on and continue until you find something that does!

Enjoy the journey of self-discovery in all facets…
