Adding Avocado to Your Diet

Avocados contain glutathione, one of the most potent antioxidants and disease fighting agents available. Unfortunately avocados, high in monounsaturated fats, have gotten a bad rap during the past low-fat era. But, depriving yourself of avocados will only work to hinder your weight loss while definitely depriving you of a super-yummy source of healthy fats and antioxidants good for any complexion. The type of fat that avocados are rich in, is not the type of fat that’s make you ‘fat’. The fat in avocados is an essential fatty acid that is literally slurped up by your cells, skin, hair, nails and nervous system as the ultimate moisturizer and hydrator inside and out.

Studies show that people sustain their nutrition program longer and have greater weight loss on a diet that contains about 30% healthy monounsaturated fat, like those in avocados, rather than a low-fat diet. This is because fats, when eaten in the proper balance with carbohydrates, can help to slow the release of sugars into the blood stream, thereby triggering less insulin release. Insulin is basically the hormone which instructs the body to store energy as fat while preventing the use of stored energy, making it a dieter’s nemesis if levels are too high. So this week, try adding 1/4 -1/2 of a sliced avocado to your salad every day or mash ½ avocado with 2 tbsp of salsa and have 15-20 organic tortilla chips with them for a delicious and satisfying snack.

Or you can try a recipe from my brand new cookbook, coming out in just a few short weeks…

Simple Avocado Toast (serves 1-2)

  • 1-2 slices of either Sprouted Organic Toast or Gluten-Free Bread
  • ½ – full avocado
  • 2 Tbsp. hemp seeds
  • Tbsp. lemon zest
  • Touch of cinnamon
  1. Toast your bread.
  2. Choose to either thinly slice your avocado and layer on top of your toast OR mash your avocado and spread on top.
  3. Sprinkle your hemp seeds, fresh lemon zest and touch of cinnamon over top.
  4. Sometimes I also squeeze a bit of fresh lemon juice on top for an extra flavour boost.
